The figure of the spectator was widely criticized in the late 20th century as it was considered part of the commodification process of everyday life in the forms of spectacle. The spectator, understood as one who does not actively participate in life but rather observes it from a distance, is a passive user and an uncritical consumer. They coexist with and regenerate the spectacle system, simultaneously presenting themselves as both content to be consumed and as a consumer.
However, precisely because of this complex position, the figure of the spectator is useful for understanding our mediated relationship with the world and for rethinking our models of active participation in society. The condition of waiting, as a form of distant observation, is a state of both actual and apparent inactivity. Looking at the world through the eyes of a spectator does not necessarily imply passive consumption or an uncritical acceptance of reality. Rather, it suggests a process of perspective-taking, a conscious and active listening, and a subjective and engaged form of observation.
